Built to Drain & Last

Licensed & Insured

Retaining wall construction in the Coachella Valley holds slopes and creates level, usable yards. We build garden walls, terraced slopes, raised patios, and erosion control that stands up to desert runoff.

Ultimate Pro Landscape is a family-owned, licensed crew working on valley homes since 2019. Every wall we build is engineered to drain, anchor, and hold for the long haul.

MATCHED TO YOUR LOT

We Pick the Right Wall Type for Your Slope and Soil

No two slopes are the same. Wall type depends on your height, your load, and your soil. We match the system to your lot before we break ground.

Coachella Valley soils run rocky and sandy. That changes which wall holds best on your property. A wall that works on clay can fail fast in loose desert ground.

We build several wall types for valley homes:

  • Segmental block walls for clean, modular strength
  • Poured concrete walls for heavy loads and tall spans
  • Natural stone walls for a rugged, high-end look
  • Terraced walls that step down steep slopes safely

The right pick depends on what the wall must hold. A low garden border needs less than a slope above a patio. We size the system to the real job.

We walk your property first. You learn which wall fits your grade, your soil, and your budget. Then we build the one that lasts, not the one that’s cheapest to start.

A matched wall costs less over time. The wrong system leans, cracks, or fails within years. Getting it right up front saves you a costly rebuild.

    WATER IS THE ENEMY

Proper Drainage Is the Key to a Wall That Lasts

Most walls fail for one reason: water. Trapped water builds pressure behind the block until the wall gives. Drainage is the single biggest factor in a wall that holds.

The desert makes this worse, not easier. Monsoon flash floods send sudden runoff straight at your wall. A wall built without drainage can fail in one storm season.

    backyard-landscape-retaining-wall-construction-01-ultimate-pro-landscaping-coachella-valley 1

We build drainage into every wall:

    • Gravel backfill behind the block to channel water down
    • A perforated drain pipe at the base to carry water away
    • Weep holes or outlets so water has a clear exit
    • Proper grading that moves runoff away from the wall

Homes near washes or graded slopes face the most risk. Sudden water hits these walls hard and often. We plan drainage around your specific runoff path.

Skipping this step is the most common shortcut we see. A cheap wall with no drainage looks fine for a season. Then the first heavy rain pushes it over.

We never cut this corner. Every wall we build moves water out, not in. That is why our walls outlast the quick jobs down the street.

    ANCHORED DEEP

Our Crews Build to the 1/3 Buried-Base Rule

A wall is only as strong as its base. The 1/3 rule means burying about one-third of the wall’s height below grade. That buried base is what keeps the wall from sliding.

Loose desert soil needs a deep, anchored footing. Sandy ground shifts under pressure. A shallow base lets the whole wall creep forward and lean.

    front-yard-landscape-retaining-wall-construction-with-plants-ultimate-pro-landscaping-coachella-valley 1

Our build process follows proven steps:

    • We dig and compact a solid base trench.
    • We bury roughly one-third of the wall height.
    • We step each course back for a slight backward lean.
    • We lock the base course level before stacking higher.

That backward step is called batter. It tilts the wall into the slope it holds. The soil pushes against a wall that’s already leaning back, not falling forward.

Palm Desert owners come to us tired of walls that bulge. The fix is almost always the base. A wall set on shallow, loose footing was doomed from day one.

We take the time to anchor every wall right. The base work is hidden, but it does the heavy lifting. You get a wall that stays straight for decades.

    NO SHORTCUTS

We Avoid the Common Block Mistakes That Cause Failure

Failed walls usually share the same handful of mistakes. We’ve torn out enough DIY walls to know exactly what goes wrong. We build to avoid every one.

Scarce desert water makes these errors costly. When a flash flood hits a weak wall, it fails fast. The damage spreads to patios, beds, and foundations behind it.

The mistakes we design around include:

    • Skipped gravel backfill that traps water behind the block
    • Missing drain pipe with nowhere for water to escape
    • No batter so the wall stands straight up and tips forward
    • A shallow or unlevel base that lets the wall slide
    • Wrong block for the height and load it must carry

Most owners who call us are on their second wall. The first one cracked, leaned, or fell within a few years. They want it done right this time.

We start from a solid base and build up correctly. Backfill, drainage, and batter all go in as we stack. Skipping any one of them invites failure.

You get a wall built to hold, not to redo. Each step is done in order by our own crew. No shortcuts, no surprises, no callback in two years.

    TALL WALLS DONE LEGAL

We Engineer Indio Walls Over Three Feet for Safety

Tall walls carry serious load and serious risk. Once a wall passes a set height, it needs more than block and backfill. Indio owners with tall or terraced walls need engineering and permits.

Local codes require permits above set heights. A tall wall built without one can be flagged, fined or forced down. We handle the paperwork so your wall is safe and legal.

What is the most common cause of retaining wall failure here?

Poor drainage causes most wall failures in the valley. Trapped water builds pressure behind the block until it leans or falls. Desert flash floods make this risk worse than in most regions. We build gravel backfill and a drain pipe into every wall to relieve that pressure. Call for a free site assessment to check your slope.

      stars-removebg-preview

How much of the base should be buried?

About one-third of the wall’s height should sit below grade. This is the 1/3 rule, and it’s what keeps a wall from sliding forward. Loose desert soil makes a deep, anchored base even more important. A shallow base is one of the top reasons walls lean. We dig and compact a proper base on every job.

      stars-removebg-preview

Do tall retaining walls need a permit in the valley?

Yes. Walls over a set height usually need a permit and engineering. Codes vary by city, so Indio and Palm Desert rules can differ. We handle permit drawings and reinforcement for tall and terraced walls. That keeps your wall safe, legal, and built to code. Ask us during your site visit.

      stars-removebg-preview

What goes behind a retaining wall?

Gravel backfill and a perforated drain pipe go behind the wall. The gravel channels water down, and the pipe carries it away. Without both, water pools behind the block and pushes it over. We also grade the surface so runoff moves away from the wall. This drainage system is what makes a wall last.

      stars-removebg-preview

When is the best time to build a retaining wall?

Fall through spring is the prime window for wall work. Mild weather makes for cleaner base prep and easier curing. Building before summer heat and monsoon season is the smart call. A finished, draining wall is ready when the first storms hit. We schedule valley installs around these seasons.

      stars-removebg-preview

Can you fix or replace a wall that's already leaning?

Often yes, depending on how far it’s gone. A slight lean may be caught with new drainage and reinforcement. A bulging or cracked wall usually needs a rebuild from the base up. We assess the cause first, then give you honest options. Call us for a free look before it fails further.
